Explore Tokyo - Temple in Asakusa in Tokyo, Japan

In 1989, Tokyo took as its official symbol an emblem in the shape of a ginkgo leaf -- its official tree -- with the three arcs that form the leaf's shape standing for growth, prosperity and charm -- qualities that Tokyo today has in abundance.

Modern Tokyo looks to the future while honoring its past. Braiding the ancient with the ultra-modern, and the sacred with the secular, Tokyo hosts an extraordinary number of festivals, rituals, and celebrations (Events) while putting its particular kind of modern stamp on things. Starting Shogatsu Hatsumode (Japanese New Year) in which resident pay visits to a Buddhist temple, such as the Sensoji Temple, or a Shinto shrine to pray for good fortune in the coming year, the calendar is full of holidays and festivities.

Perhaps the best place to understand the blend of old Edo -- the city's original name -- with modern Tokyo is by a stop to Roppongi Hill. This city-within-a city, as the locals call it, is a residential neighborhood redesigned in 2003 to include commercial and office space. Now the headquarters for much of the Japanese IT industry such as Yahoo and Livedoor, this area boasts great, upscale shopping, and is also home to the Suntory Museum of Art, which features over 2,000 pieces related to Japanese life that link Japan's ancient and modern cultures.

While Tokyo is becoming increasingly modernized, there are still places where the traditional arts, especially in the theater, thrive. Kabuki-za is a theater that hosts the traditional Kabuki performances, with its exquisite costumes, elaborate staging, and intricate plots. The ancient sport of sumo wrestling is wildly popular today with six major competitions per year at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in the Ryogoku (Ueno-Asakusa-Ryogoku) neighborhood, where many of the wrestlers live and compete.

There is always something to do in Tokyo. Whether you're here for the Ueno Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival), or you just want to experience the astonishing nightlife, with Japan's huge selection of restaurants, bars, and night clubs, Tokyo is a city of intrigue and contradictions, of ancient temples and soaring high rises, and of shrines and shopping malls that has it all.
