"Art is an explosion," the pioneer Japanese artist Taro Okamoto once famously said. Well known for his sculpture "Tower of the Sun," built for the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Okamoto's explosive character and unique artwork live on at both the Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum and the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art. Packed with Okamoto's paintings, manuscripts, and sculptures, the Memorial Museum was the artist's home and studio for nearly 50 years.
Located in the Aoyama area of Tokyo, the museum is just around the corner from the key shopping street Kotto Dori, and a convenient stop for those planning to visit the Nezu Institute of Fine Arts. Outside of Tokyo, in the artist's hometown of Kawasaki, the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art also features a permanent collection of Okamoto's work, as well as his parents' work, and temporary exhibits, lectures, and workshops.
