Antique plate with gold work at Tokyo National Museum

The spacious Ueno-Asakusa-Ryogoku Park in Taito-ku is home to the Tokyo National Museum, Japan's oldest and largest museum. Established in 1872, the museum features over 110,000 objects, including 88 Japanese National Treasure holdings.

With five exhibition buildings, the museum's massive collection focuses on ancient Japanese art, Asian art along the Silk Road, as well as Greco-Buddhist art. Free English guided tours may be available; museum guidebooks are available in English. When the weather's right, visitors can even peruse the outdoor exhibitions and garden.

The Tokyo National Museum is joined by the National Science Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, the Tokyo Ueno Zoo, and other attractions, making Ueno Park a popular destination for tourists and locals.
