Home to over 2,600 animals from 464 species, the Ueno Zoo (Ueno-Asakusa-Ryogoku) was founded in 1882 and is the oldest zoo in Japan. The Tokyo Ueno Zoo is perhaps most admired over its long history for its work with giant pandas, which first arrived from China in 1972. Since then, it has continued to work with zoos in the United States, Mexico, and other countries for conservation efforts and breeding of these special animals. The zoo's efforts to breed other endangered animals continues.
After visiting the animals, be sure to stop by the five-story pagoda and the tea ceremony house. Built in 1631 (and reconstructed in 1958 after it was destroyed by fire), the tea ceremony house was originally built to entertain seventeenth-century Shoguns.
