The Meiji Jingu Shrine, constructed to venerate the souls of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, consists of two areas. Naien, the inner precinct/garden, is centered on the shrine buildings, which include a treasure museum of objects that once belonged to the Emperor and Empress. Gaien, the outer precinct/garden, includes the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, which features a collection of 80 murals depicting the lives of the Emperor and his consort.
Large enough to include a variety of sports facilities, including a national stadium, this outer precinct is also the site for Meiji Memorial Hall, once a governmental meeting place that is now used primarily for weddings. The shrine was built in a garden area where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken sometimes visited. The shrine was constructed of Japanese cypress from Kiso Valley, which is considered the best lumber produced in Japan.
The Meiji Jingu Shrine is located in the Shibuya (Shinjuku-Shibuya) neighborhood near the Harajuku Station.
