First performed in Kyoto at the beginning of the seventeenth century, Kabuki theater has become a central aspect of Japan's traditional culture. This unique drama form has been put on at Kabuki-za since 1889. Sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing," Kabuki involves both, not to exclude drama from these performances. A program, which can last as long as eight hours, consists of three or four separate shows. For a movie-length experience of Kabuki theater, visitors can get admission for a makumi (single show) and earphone guides in English can also be rented.
Located in the Ginza district at the heart of Tokyo, Kabuki-za is in an area rich with boutiques and department stores for shopping, plus restaurants, coffee houses, and other theaters, such as Shinbashi Embujo.
