Sumo at Ryogoku Kokugikan

With a sumo stadium and museum, many sumo stables (heya), where the wrestlers train and live, and restaurants serving chanko-nabe, the stew eaten by the wrestlers, Ryogoku (Ueno-Asakusa-Ryogoku) is without a doubt sumo territory. Holding over 10,000 fans, the indoor sporting arena Ryogoku Kokugikan is the center of the action.

The stadium hosts three of the six annual sumo tournaments: the Hatsu Basho Sumo Tournaments in January, the Natsu Basho in May, and the Hon-Basho Sumo Tournaments in September. In these tournaments, novice and veteran wrestlers compete for titleholder ranks, the highest being yokozuna (grand champion), a designation ultimately decided by the Yokozuna Deliberation Council and Japan Sumo Association.

Ryogoku Kokugikan has also been the site for the G-1 Climax, an annual New Japan Pro Wrestling tournament. Even without a tournament going on, visitors can explore the artifacts at the sumo museum and the nearby Edo-Tokyo Museum.
