New Year festivities last through the month of January in Japan, where the New Year is the most important holiday of the year. At the Yushima Tenjin shrine, take part in Hatsu-Tenjin-sai on January 25. The Uso-kae-Shinji event is the biggest part of this important festival, during which people hope to change the lies they told during the previous year into truths for the new. They do this by bringing their carved wooden figures of the Uso bird ("uso" also means "lie") to the temple to exchange them for new ones.
After receiving your new Uso bird, head to the rows of food stalls to enjoy traditional specialty Japanese treats, available especially for the occasion.
