Kamakura Takigi Noh at Kamakuragu Shrine - Tokyo Hotels .com

A Noh Play

Every year from October 8 to 9, thousands gather to see an open-air performance called Kamakura Takigi Noh, which is performed at the Kamakuragu Shrine in Yokohama-Kamakura. (Noh is a major form of ancient Japanese musical drama performed exclusively by men.) In this unusual theater experience, all lights are extinguished and firewood is burned, casting a haunting glow on the performance. The play begins with Okina, a highly sacred opener that invokes fertility and longevity.

A very limited number of tickets are available and early reservations are required. For approval, contact the Kamakura City Tourism Association well in advance. This shrine is easily accessed by taking the JR Yokosuku Line to Kamakura Station and then walking for 25 minutes.
