The Togenuki Jizoson Taisai is a grand festival held at the Togenuki Jizoson Koganji Temple on the 24th day of January, May, and September. Many monks pray for the well-being of family, business success, and the fulfillment of wishes. The festival's highlight is a ritual reading of all 600 volumes of the Prajnaparamita sutra. The book is held high in the air and the monks flip through it to symbolize that they have read the entire volume. It is thought that prayers will be answered in good health if one receives the air from the flipping book, or if one touches the monk's gown.
The Koganji Temple is a mere five-minute walk from the JR Sugamo station within the bustling downtown streets of Sugamo, a popular shopping district for the older generation. It can also be accessed by the Toei subway Mita Line.
