For club dancing, Tokyo electronica, and live performances by world-famous musicians of rock and pop, Tokyo's Liquid Room covers it all--just check the schedule and see what's happening on the stage or dance floor. When it comes to good, loud, live music, the Loft in Kabukicho makes its checkerboard stage home to many a punk, rock, and grunge act. Gas Panic, with three locations in
Akasaka-Roppongi and one in
Shinjuku-Shibuya, also offers loud and live rock as well as one of Tokyo's cheapest happy hours running until 9:30 p.m. Jazz connoisseurs will delight in Tokyo's wide selection of world-class jazz bars, including Blue Note Tokyo in the Minato district, Sweet Basil 139 in Roppongi, and the Shinjuki Pit Inn, which features matinee shows.
Since its opening in 1991, the Minato-ku techno dance club Yellow (aka Space Lab Yellow) has been well known for its historic raves, international guest DJs, and spacious layout. Another popular techno and breakbeat spot is Womb in Shibuya, featuring four floors for dancing and hanging out, plus a full bar and restaurant. Hip-hop fans can check out the local scene at the club Harlem in Shibuya, lovers of French house will enjoy Shibuya's late-night club and restaurant La Fabrique, and the jet-set elite from every nation love to cut a rug at Roppongi's Lexington Queen. For dancing by the sea till the sun comes up, head over to Ageha in Koto-ku, which offers multiple dance spaces and musical styles, including house, techno, hip-hop, reggae, and trance.
